At the July 11 meeting, Allen Township Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of a new Pierce firetruck.
Fire company President Jake Schock said two manufacturing companies were pursued. The quotes were very close in price, and Schock felt the upgraded suspension, better electrical system and various cost-reduction options made the Pierce truck the better option.
The truck was quoted at $1,299,561 and will take between 46 to 50 months for production and delivery.
Supervisors decided to pay the entire amount up front, after Supervisor Gary Behler discussed concerns that future boards may rescind the money. It was agreed the township would put forward a million dollars, and the fire department will cover the remaining balance.
In other business, the board approved three motions applying for $6,076,800 Local Share Account grants from Northampton, Lehigh and Monroe counties and the state.
The board is hoping to receive at least some money from each grant to cover the costs of the fire department building renovations.
Kim LaBrake, project manager with D’Huy Engineering, provided an in-depth look at the renovations. She said the west side of the building will be used for the meeting space. A secure vestibule will lead residents to a receptionist, and there will be two conference rooms, one bigger than the other.
Additionally, the township manager, IT department and possibly the tax office will all receive offices in the renovated building.
Supervisors will next meet 6 p.m. Aug. 8 at the fire department building, 3530 Howertown Road.
