Valley students tour college campuses, museum

PRESS PHOTO COURTESY GENERATION NEXT Generation Next chaperoned 47 11th grade participants from Easton Area, Liberty, and Freedom high schools on an overnight trip in April to visit college campuses across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Students had guided tours at West Chester University, Cheyney University, Towson University and Howard University and visited the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Above: Freedom and Liberty High School Juniors on a college tour at Howard University. The goal of this trip was for students to experience the difference between private and state universities, in addition to feeling out small versus large campuses and comparing student populations. Program Director Kumari Ghafoor-Davis also wanted attendees to recognize the opportunities for students of color at historically black universities and colleges (HBUC's) by visiting Cheyney University and Howard University. Generation Next currently serves freshmen through senior students in Easton Area, Liberty, Freedom, and William Allen high schools and offers participants college and career readiness programming, SAT prep, life skills coaching, social emotional intelligence and learning lessons, financial literacy classes, a Matched Savings program, and mentor matching.
