‘Using art as a way of learning’
In the heart of the valley, there exists a beacon of creativity and inspiration that has recently been recognized as the best public charter high school in the state. Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts has carved a path for talented young artists to flourish and discover their true potential.
Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Arts proudly graduated 142 exceptionally creative and talented students recently, students who are now poised to make a lasting impact on the world.
As Interim Executive Director and CEO Diane Labelle recalled the challenges of COVID-19 during the years that comprised this graduating class, she reiterated the school’s philosophy of using the arts to face and solve the world’s issues through creative means. Like the complexities brought on by COVID-19, it created a “nonlinear path that encouraged students to problem solve in a way they hadn’t done before “which is a testament to the school’s approach of using art as a way of learning.”
Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Arts, with its vibrant atmosphere and unwavering dedication to the arts, has become a haven for young creative minds. Whether it is visual arts, dance, theater, music or writing, this school has fostered an environment that nurtures the unique talents of each student.
Unlike other schools that select a valedictorian to address the graduating class, through an application process, two students are chosen to address their peers. This year the address was made by Gabrielle Joseph, of Allentown, a theater major who will be attending Vanderbilt University as a biomedical engineering major with plans to become a cardiovascular surgeon and Natalie Sysko, of Nazareth, a vocal music major with plans to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute to major in data science.
One of the school’s remarkable qualities lies in its celebration of individuality and diversity. Recognizing art has no boundaries, Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Arts embraces students from all walks of life, fostering a rich tapestry of cultural backgrounds and artistic perspectives. This inclusive environment encourages students to explore their roots, challenge societal norms and develop their unique voices. By exposing them to a multitude of artistic styles and perspectives, the school prepares these graduates to become cultural ambassadors who can bridge divides and inspire change.
The success of Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Arts can be attributed to its unwavering commitment to excellence in arts education. The faculty, comprising accomplished artists and educators, serves as mentors, guiding students to push the boundaries of their creativity and refine their craft. By fostering a strong work ethic and encouraging collaboration, the school empowers students to develop not only their artistic skills but also the essential life skills needed to excel in any field.
Principal Jennifer Levernier proudly bestowed her parting words to the graduating class.
“As you stand on the precipice of your future, know that this world needs your artistic brilliance now more than ever,” she said. “It is through your art that will challenge conventional expectations, spark conversations and inspire change. Your creativity has the power to heal, to uplift and to bring people together. It is through your creative talent that you will leave a lasting imprint on this world.”
Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Arts instills in its students a sense of civic responsibility, emphasizing the power of art to transform communities. By engaging with local organizations, participating in outreach programs and showcasing their talents to the public, these graduates learn the importance of using their art to address social issues and inspire change. This holistic approach to education empowers students to become well-rounded individuals, capable of making a difference in the world.
Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Arts has not only been crowned the best public charter high school in Pennsylvania but has also proven itself as a catalyst for artistic excellence and social change. Its graduates, the 142 talented arts students of 2023, are poised to make a lasting impact on the world.
