Trojans take both LV Legion titles
The Lehigh Valley Legion season can have two champions, creating some confusion as to which team is actually the champion. The league crowns the team with the best overall record as the regular season champion and then holds a double elimination tournament to decide a tournament champion.
South Parkland erased any doubt by winning both titles with late inning heroics that gave them the tournament title in a 4-3 win over rival North Parkland on Tuesday.
The Trojans won the regular season championship with a record of 11-3-1 and followed that with a 5-0 performance in the tournament.
Against the Buffaloes, South Parkland scored twice in the bottom of the first when Sean Superka stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and one out. Superka lined a 2-2 pitch to center for a single that brought in both baserunners for an early 2-0 edge.
The lead held up until the top of the third when starter Jaiden Wanamaker walked Nick Lindenmuth to open the inning and then gave up a single to Tsubasa Magota to put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners along and an error allowed Lindenmuth to score and put Magota on third with one out.
Owen Ness walked and stole second leading to the Trojans intentionally walking Matt Razzis to load the bases but give the potential of a double-play grounder. A fielder’s choice brought in one run and one pitch later, Ness stole home to give the Buffaloes their first lead of the game at 3-2.
Things stayed quiet until the bottom of the sixth when Andy Klotz lined a one-strike pitch to center for a leadoff single off Noah Trager, who had pitched the whole way for North Parkland. A wild pitch moved Klotz to second and an error scored Klotz and left a runner on third with the score tied 3-3. Another error brought in the go-ahead run for South Parkland. Superka was hit by a pitch, but Trager got a double-play ball to end the inning with the Trojans up 4-3.
There were no white flags waving from the North Parkland dugout and Magota opened the inning by reaching on a four-pitch walk to put the tying run on base. Mack Parsell came back to get the first out on a strikeout and bring Ness to the plate. Ness fell behind 0-2 but worked the count to 3-2 before lining a shot at first baseman Superka, who was able to make the catch and double Magota off first base to finish off the game.
Both teams advance to the regionals, which begin Saturday at Boyertown High School. At 11:30, North Parkland will open play in the double elimination tournament against Wanderers, the Northampton County League champion. South Parkland will play Northampton, the NorCo League runner-up at 4:30 on Saturday.
