NP advances to regionals
North Parkland Legion played some close games and won a few of them in come from behind fashion. They needed that same script to beat Salisbury and advance to the championship round against rival South Parkland. The win over Salisbury not only sent the Buffaloes to the finals, but guaranteed them a spot in the Legion Regionals, which begins this weekend at Boyertown High School.
The Buffaloes trailed Salisbury 4-0 when rain suspended their Monday playoff game and pushed it to the following day. The change of day turned the tide and it was all North Parkland when the game resumed as the Buffaloes downed the Falcons 5-4 on a walk-off RBI single from Chase Whittaker.
Salisbury picked up three first-inning runs and added another in the second against starter Nick Lindenmuth to take a 4-0 lead before the game was suspended in the top of the third inning. When play resumed the next day, North Parkland went to work on its comeback.
In the bottom of the third, Andrew Beers doubled with two outs and went to third on an error. From there, Owen Ness drove him in with an RBI single to make it 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, North Parkland made it a one-run game when Matt Razzis doubled home courtesy runner Aiden Henning with one out. Beers followed with an RBI single to make it 4-3 and a single by Ness chased starting pitcher Tom Lovelidge. Reliever Andrew Grejda got the next two outs to end the inning.
To keep the momentum going, Razzis struck out the side in the sixth to record three of his six strikeouts in relief of Lindenmuth. In the bottom of the inning, two errors and a bunt single by Peyton Scherff loaded the bases with one out and Razzis tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Salisbury managed a two-out single in the top of the seventh, but Razzis got the final out to send the game to the bottom of the seventh tied 1-1.
In the seventh, another error put leadoff man Ness on base and a single by Noah Trager put runners on first and second. Tsubasa Magota worked a walk to load the bags and Whittaker stepped to the plate and took the first pitch he saw to center field for the walk-off win and a move to the finals against regular season champion South Parkland.
Salisbury committed four errors in the game, which led to three unearned runs for the Buffaloes. Razzis allowed just one hit and a walk over four innings to get the win.
North Parkland had been sent to the loser’s bracket after a loss to South Parkland. After a slow start against Salisbury in their next game, the rain washed away any doubt they might have had and they put away the Falcons.
