Snyder hoping to get read on boys team
Since 1992, Catasauqua head boys basketball coach Eric Snyder has seen his share of summer basketball games. Snyder also has been in charge of the Catty League since 1988.
He has used the games as a barometer for the upcoming season. Some have been good, some have been bad, and some have been indecisive.
This summer, Snyder really can’t get a read on his team. The Rough Riders had a 4-18 season last year, and they graduated eight seniors.
Snyder sees attendance at games as his program’s biggest issue. He hasn’t consistently been able to field a rotation with players involved with commitments to Connie Mack baseball, football workouts, and other programs such as AAU.
His Roughies are in the Whitehall Summer Basketball League and the North Catty League.
“That’s been our problem,” said Snyder. “We have had six, sometimes as many as eight kids. We also have had to forfeit a few games. We have a different number of kids every game, but we haven’t had a full team.”
Sophomore Frankie Pujols has been consistent, and he is expected to have a good year.
Snyder also has been impressed with incoming sophomores Reese Lopez, Dylan Lorah, and Caiden Weaver. Incoming freshman Aiden Reilly also has had some flashes.
“Reese has shot well, and he can be counted on to lead the team,” added Snyder. “Dylan Lorah has done a nice job, and Caden Weaver is an excellent defender, and he took two charges in a game. They both will get varsity uniforms.’’
Sophomore Hamaad Jenkins, juniors Jeremiah Cofie and Matt Fotta, and seniors Ian Juica, Peter LaPointe, and John Pushkar will be part of the lineup this winter.
The Roughies will take part in the Catch A Rising Star tournament beginning July 13, and Snyder hasn’t yet committed to the A-Town Throwdown July 27.
As far as the Catty League, Snyder is confident the third annual “Battle of the Boroughs” involving the champions and Catty and North Catty League, should be held the first week of August.
