Groller makes good on promise to himself
Just under a year ago, Whitehall’s Joey Groller made a vow to be back playing basketball this summer.
His last game was the week of July 4.
Groller was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on July 18, 2022. He experienced hospital stays and received chemotherapy and other treatments on a steady basis.
This summer, Groller achieved his goal. He has been back on the court for the Zephyrs during their summer league play. Groller’s basketball debut was big, but his return to everyday life was huge.
“It’s great to be back,” said Groller. “But I made a promise to myself to be back playing basketball this summer. I was always confident that I could do it. I set a goal the day I was diagnosed.
“It was scary at first, but I always believed that I could pull through it. I always remained confident and kept fighting.”
Zephyrs head coach Jeff Jones was happy to see the incoming junior back in the mix.
“We all have been pulling for him,” said Jones. “It was a great feeling to see him back on the court. Joey adapted quickly, and he was able to contribute.”
Groller admitted the transition back was a challenge.
“At first, I knew I had to get in better shape,” noted Groller. “I was a little winded and got tired easily. I also knew I had to work on my strength. But I really wasn’t that nervous being back on the court.”
His mother, Megan, was.
“Yes, I was,” she confirmed. “I didn’t know what could happen, and was worried about the physical contact. But he looked fine and comfortable out there.”
Groller had a recent biopsy as well as blood work that both produced favorable results.
“Joey got a green light to move ahead and everything was fine,” added his mother. “He feels good and he can move forward with his life.”
Groller and his mother have been stunned by the support from the Whitehall community and the entire Lehigh Valley. A recent fundraiser at Potts’ Doggy Shop in Northampton netted $20,000.
“It’s been pretty crazy,” said Groller. “I knew people were supportive, but I didn’t expect all the support we have received.
“It has been overwhelming,” added his mother. “Just seeing the support and outreach from people is amazing. It has been very humbling.”
Groller plans to keep working with a personal trainer through September, and he hasn’t missed a basketball practice or a recent game. He has been regaining his strength, and he has been happy with his weight gain and current status.
He has kept everything in check.
“I am where I want to be,” he said. “I am just going to keep going forward.”
