Girls hoops will look to change things up
Northampton head girls’ basketball coach Jeff Jacksits knew it was time to change course.
The Konkrete Kids began their summer league play in the Northampton Community College League without former standout Grace Lesko, along with the steady play of Nicole Yellen, who both helped the team to the consolation game in the district Class 6A bracket. Their loss to Nazareth in that game left them with an overall 13-12 record.
A year prior, the Kids graduated guards Taylor Kranzley, Kylie Gilliard, and forward Devyn Demchak from a 23-7 squad.
So, this summer, Jacksits has a team without five key starters from the past two years, all of them who played key roles in the team’s runs over the past few years.
Whether it is a transition or a rebuild, Jacksits has adopted a different approach.
“We’ll probably play four guards and a forward this year,” said the veteran coach. “We’re not big at all. We have to change our philosophy this season.
“We lost our scoring, and we’ll probably have to look to be more of a fast-break team.”
Jacksits has looked to incoming junior Annie Beenders to take over at the point this winter, and she also will have a major role in the team’s scoring.
Fellow incoming junior Jenna Raysley saw more playing time as the season progressed last year, and she has developed more of a role this summer.
Incoming senior Kylie Eberts suffered a stress fracture at the beginning of last year, and didn’t play until late January. She will be counted on as a steady contributor. Senior Rachel Yost got limited time last year, and she also will be in a bigger role.
“We’re learning,” noted Jacksits about his group. “We’re in a league that doesn’t keep records, and we don’t have to worry about wins and losses. We have been able to work on a few things.
“We’ll be living and learning.”
Jacksits does see a future for the program, as he anticipates a number of potential impact players in their system. Ready to begin his 20th season, Jacksits doesn’t have any plans to leave his post anytime soon.
“We have some good kids coming up,” he said. “We’ll see what we can do during the rest of the summer. It will take some time, but we hope we can get it together before Christmas.”
