Parkland hosts legislators
Parkland School District Administrators and School Board hosted a breakfast with local and state legislators on June 1.
According to Parkland Community Relations and Development Director Nicole McGalla, the district discussed its budget for next year with a focus on future predicted growth in enrollment.
The school district team emphasized the importance of the basic education funding appropriation, the value of restoring the PlanCon process to help offset construction project costs, and the importance of trying to reform the special ed funding and cyber charter funding formulas to account for actual costs of both programs.
Administrators outlined enrollment growth predictions for the future and how the district is planning for a new building project to address capacity concerns.
“A lot of financial planning as well as thoughts and input on the future of educational programs has gone into the planning process and options have been studies for possible solutions to the crowded secondary schools,” McGalla wrote. “Many concerns and feedback has been studied via a slew of public meetings, staff meetings, student meetings, site visits and community surveys.”
The district is now in the phase of estimating costs for all possible projects that will address the continued growth in Parkland.
State Senators Nick Miller, D-14th, and Jarrett Coleman, R-16th, attended in addition to state Reps. Mike Schlossberg, D-132nd, Zach Mako, R-183rd, and Ryan Mackenzie, R-187th.
Also, the Lehigh Valley District Manager Mariska Van Alst from the office of Congresswoman Susan Wild, D-7th, attended, as did Parkland School Board Directors Bob Bold, Rob Cohen, Carol Facchiano, Lisa Roth and Annette Wilcox.
