Falcons finish LVL season at 8-7, face NV to open playoffs
Salisbury went through a stretch of three games in four days and came through with a 2-1 mark in that stretch which included wins against Northern Valley (7-9) and Allentown (5-9). The only setback was against North Parkland (9-4-1).
The win over Northern Valley saw some wild baseball in the first and last innings.
After Northern Valley went up 1-0 in the first inning, Salisbury (8-7) came back with three in the bottom of the inning before it had to endure a tough ninth inning to hold on for the 6-5 win.
In the first, the first four hitters reached base with three doubles and a single. Nate Nunez and Michael Stauffer opened with back-to-back doubles before Tom Lovelidge singled to make it 2-1. Matt Nunez then doubled to make it 3-1 before Northern Valley starter Tyler Fenstermaker settled in to put down the next three hitters in order.
In the fourth, Salisbury had a runner at third with two outs and Tyler Kuder stepped to the plate and delivered a ground ball through the middle to drive in Jake Zellin, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
The insurance run made it 4-1 Salisbury, but Northern Valley picked up two runs against Lovelidge, who started the game for Salisbury. The Chargers went to Evan Druckenmiller on the mound to start the bottom of the inning and he walked the first two hitters he faced. With two outs, Lucas Soria drew a walk to load the bases and a passed ball allowed pinch-runner Caleb Gonzalez to score from third to make it 5-3 in favor of Salisbury.
Andrew Grejda delivered what would be another key two-out RBI single in the sixth to put Salisbury up 6-3 heading to the final inning.
Lovelidge remained on the mound for the seventh and a fielding error, a fielder’s choice and a single put runners on first and second with one out. Lovelidge got the next hitter on an infield pop-up and just when it looked like Salisbury would put the game away, Trey Sterling doubled to center for Northern Valley to cut the lead to 6-5. That would be the end of the uprising though when Lovelidge picked up his eighth strikeout of the game for the final out.
In all, Lovelidge threw 102 pitches, 68 of which were strikes. Of the five runs he allowed, only one was earned and he allowed six hits and issued three walks.
Salisbury allowed six unearned runs in a 7-4 loss to North Parkland, giving the Falcons five errors in two games.
Gonzalez, Lovelidge, and Matt Nunez all collected two hits in the 6-3 win over Allentown. Salisbury again fell behind early when Allentown picked up two runs in the top of the first but came right back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Matt Nunez doubled to drive in the first run and Jake Zellin singled to tie the game.
Salisbury added to its lead with single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings before picking up two in the fifth when the first four hitters all reached base. Nate Nunez led off with a walk and a double by Lovelidge put runners on second and third. Singles from Matt Nunez and Matt Spisszak each drove in a run to make it 6-2. Allentown added a run in the top of the ninth but could not do any further damage against Salisbury.
Dominic Gracia helped limit the work from pitchers for Salisbury as he tossed a complete game, throwing 105 pitches and allowing just five hits in the game.
Salisbury will again face Northern Valley in the opening playoff game Wednesday at home. The tournament is a double elimination set up.
