Volunteers needed for Macungie Memorial Park events

Volunteers are needed to help with events at Macungie Memorial Park. The park is self-supporting and depends on events and donations to operate. Refreshment stand help is needed for upcoming park events. Volunteers do not need to be Macungie residents. For more information, call Diane at 610-967-1531.

Grace Lutheran Church, 28 W. Main St., will offer its free community meal in the church fellowship hall 4-5:30 p.m. July 14. Takeout service will also be available.

Grace Lutheran Church holds a weekly free food distribution 2-4 p.m. every Wednesday, July 5, 12, 19 and 26. Signs will be posted with directions for parking and pickup.

During the month of July, there will be a monthly book club meeting and a Gilmore Girls Trivia Night 7-9 p.m. July 14 at the Macungie Institute, 510 E. Main St. Weekly card games are held 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays. Card game lessons can be arranged and reservations can be made by calling 610-966-7830. The Macungie Farmers Market is open 4-7 p.m. every Thursday on Lumber Street, just off Main Street, Macungie.

There will be a Backyard Vendor Fair 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 8 at Macungie Memorial Park.

There will be a Cruise Night 3 p.m. July 15 at Macungie Memorial Park. Vehicles will start arriving 2 p.m. For more information, call 610-966-4289.

The Alburtis Seniors will have a meeting noon July 19 at Church of the Good Shepherd, 135 Quarry Road, Alburtis. There will be a potluck buffet lunch followed by a meeting and bingo. There is a small charge. Bring a covered dish. For more information, call Doris at 610-966-3653.

The 60th Annual Das Awkscht Fescht, one of the country’s largest antique and classic car shows, will take place Aug. 4-6 at Macungie Memorial Park. The featured car this year is the Chevy Corvette. There will also be kids’ entertainment and activities, including jugglers, magicians, ventriloquists and clowns. Gates open 6 a.m. for walk-ins and show cars enter after 7:30 a.m. Juried arts and crafts vendors will be open noon to 7 p.m. Aug. 4; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 5 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 6.

The flea market remains open until dusk. Musical entertainment continues until 10:30 p.m. Aug. 4; until 10 p.m. Aug. 5 and until 4:30 p.m. Aug. 6. Food will be available for purchase. Fireworks will light up the sky 9:30 p.m. Aug. 5. For more information, go to www.awkscht.com.

There will also be an Outdoor Toy Town show Aug. 5 and 6 along Lumber Street, just off Main Street.

Macungie pool is open noon to 8 p.m. weekdays; weekend hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Toddler time is 11 a.m. to noon daily. The pool will close for swim meets 5 p.m. July 6 and 10. Swim lessons are available. Pool visitors must park outside the park grounds during Das Awkscht Fescht Aug. 2-6. More information is available at www.MacungiePark.com.

Macungie Borough Council has in-person public meetings at the Macungie Institute. The next meetings will be 7:30 p.m. July 17, Aug. 7 and 21.

We were recently discussing the merits of Teslas. We appreciate the energy saving and safety features of the car and the tax rebates have certainly made the price more attractive. Several of Ben’s friends drive Teslas and he said, “We should buy a Tesla.” I replied, “Are you paying for it?” Ben’s reply: “I’ll buy the gas.”
