Salisbury wins six of first 10 summer league games

Even if it is just a little over halfway through the season of the Lehigh Valley Summer Basketball League, the Salisbury High School boys basketball team has achieved goals and played well. The Falcons have already doubled their win total from all of last summer, still with a few more games to be played and potentially playoffs.

Salisbury has won six of its 10 games and is in the middle of the pack of the standings of the small school division.

“Last year we won three games all summer,” said head coach Jason Weaver. “We are 6-4 in summer league (this year). Our JVs are 5-0 and we have the tournaments coming up. The kids are excited, which makes me excited. I am happy for the guys to get some wins and I hope it translates onto the court in the winter.”

With summer league games having shorter durations, the Falcons are still scoring at a higher clip and giving themselves a chance in every game, even ones they may not come out on top in. Weaver believes his offense has been communicating and passing well to help in this regard.

“We are sharing the ball on offense,” said Weaver. “We are getting balanced scoring and are not dependent on one guy having to score for us. We are also getting better defensively. We need to continue to improve our rebounding so we can be better defensively.”

The team won two of their three games played within the last two weeks. Last Thursday, June 15, Salisbury defeated Roberto Clemente 44-34 behind 10 points from Jairo Suarez. The Falcons then dropped their next game 51-39 to Upper Perkiomen, but bounced back two nights later with a 62-49 victory over Colonial League foe Catasauqua. Jake Zellin netted a game-high 16 points in the win over Catty.

Different players have led the team in scoring in different games this summer.

“We are getting contributions from a lot of different guys on the court,” Weaver said. “There is competition for spots and playing time, which makes guys play harder. It is a good thing to have depth and competition.”
