Resident raises concern for unknown contents of drums near turnpike bridge

The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners held its meeting June 16 in the township building which began with public comment.

A resident living near Camp Olympic expressed his concern for some drums located near the turnpike bridge and Camp Olympic. Also the drums are near a stream in the same location.

Township Manager Bruce Beitel said the township was made aware of these drums which contain rusty bridge metal. They are located in this area as turnpike bridge reconstruction and restoration is occurring in the near future. As the Indian Creek Road turnpike bridge is in the process of the same, the Lower Macungie Road bridge is the next project.

Board President Brian Higgins said the state can do whatever it wants, leaving materials wherever it is suitable for them.

The resident also spoke of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation trucks driving too fast on township roads. Higgins said traffic is monitored and can be reported to the police. The resident filed an official complaint with the township.

PennDOT has asked to access the area around the turnpike bridge near Camp Olympic as they want to enter the area through Camp Olympic.

The Commonwealth Financing Authority notified the township of a grant award to the township for use by Macungie Ambulance for training items. The grant is for $14,964.

A bid award was granted for the roof replacement for the public works building. The low bid was received from Hulton Contracting in Line Lexington in the amount of $124,737.

An adaptive traffic signal project along Hamilton Boulevard and Mill Creek Road is being considered. The project is expected to cost no more than $850,000 with some of the costs directed at Upper Macungie Township. There are 13 signals with three of those in Upper Macungie Township. COSTARS (Pennsylvania’s cooperative purchasing program) has been approved for this project with an additional amount needed for conduits.

There is a request to expand urban zoning for the area around Liberty Lane. This was up for a hearing but there was no second to the motion so it failed.

The next meeting will be 6 p.m. July 20. There is no meeting July 6.
