LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Legion will be busy this week

These are busy times for the Northampton NORCO Legion team.

With their 2-1 victory over Nazareth Sunday, the Konkrete Kids raised their record to 8-1 overall and sat atop the NORCO standings. They were a half-game ahead of Birches and a game over the Wanders.

In order to keep their pace, the Kids certainly will face a challenge.

Beginning Sunday, Northampton was scheduled play every day until the following Sunday. During their week, the Kids began the week with matchups against Freemansburg Monday and Tuesday and finished the week with three of their final four games against rival Wanderers. All weather-pending, of course.

Northampton manager Steve Kerbacher stated the league wants to end the regular season July 2 and begin playoffs July 3. The Kids are scheduled to play 17 regular-season games, and they are trying to reschedule a game with Hellertown, one that was postponed earlier due to Saucon Valley players in the district and state playoffs.

“It will be pretty busy,” said Kerbacher. “We lost a couple of games early due to the state playoffs, and we also had two days off in a row.

“But this will be a big week for us, especially playing the Wanderers, which is always a big game for both of us.”

One thing the Kids will need is pitching, and they apparently have enough for their needs.

Hunter Corrow, who pitched last year and finished with a 5-1 mark, returned along with catcher Eli Angstadt.

Aside from Corrow, the Kids have recent high school hurlers Evan Hughes, Owen Laury, Matt Merced, Sam Erschen, and Mason Haupt. Jed Colyer, Ian Onuschak, and Dylan Fosko will be in the field.

“We have the arms,” added Kerbacher. “Sam Erschen just threw a nice game for us against Palmer. We hadn’t used him yet, but he was pretty efficient.”

Offensively, Merced, who also plays third base, led the team with a .458 average with a team-high 11 hits. Erschen was at .400 with 10 hits, and Angstadt hit .348. Corrow hit .320, and Haupt was at .313.

Kerbacher felt good about his team’s situation, and is confident he will have a full squad after the other commitments appear to be over.

“We had nine of 10 kids just recently,” he said. “But we should have a full squad from now on. When everybody is here, we can be a very good team.”
