Stiles: AARP chapter turns 45
Whitehall Mayor Michael Harakal Jr. presented an official commendation to AARP Chapter 3115 for its 45th anniversary at this month’s meeting.
The Whitehall chapter started Feb. 3, 1978, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Whitehall. At an early meeting, Ed Galgon, the township executive during that time, shared helpful tips and information for senior citizens on behalf of the state.
Chapter 3115 grew to 600 members in the 1980s. Keeping the number of members steady became a challenge with an addition of more retirement homes in the area and then the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bill Strauch served as president of the chapter for 10 years - 2013-23. The June meeting was his last meeting serving as president. Harakal presented him a commendation as well for his work as president.
The commendation said, “Strauch had a likable, casual style of leadership that made the meetings interesting and fun.”
It was noted Strauch and his wife, Gloria, always made the people feel welcome, and they brought great speakers into the meetings.
During the meeting, Strauch passed the gavel to the new incoming chapter president, Dan Herzog. A buffet was also provided by Samuel Owens Restaurant.
