LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Northampton pool opens for 2023 season

The opening day of Northampton Borough’s municipal pool June 3 was a success, despite a cool and mostly overcast day.

The pool and pool grounds looked great, attendees said. The pool received a fresh coat of paint, and there was a new entrance. New diving boards and a new slide are also planned.

Northampton Borough Council supports this quality-of-life venue in the borough. The public works department received accolades from council at its June council meeting for its diligent labor getting the pool ready to open on time.

The temperature stayed in the mid-70s, with much cloud cover and a cool breeze. Despite the weather, patrons, particularly the youngsters, appeared to enjoy the pool. They waded into the cool water, swam and ate some food from the concession stand.

Jaden Houser and Brady Simock, of Northampton, staffed the concession stand. The two Northampton Area High School students served up a variety of concession stand food. Of special note were the delicious cheeseburgers and beef hot dogs grilled to perfection.

Pool admission ticket seller Trent Reeves, also a student at NAHS, staffed the new entrance gate. The new admission area promotes staff and patron safety. He said he looks forward to his summer working at the pool.

Lifeguard Sophie Steier, of Northampton, who graduated from NAHS June 2, was in her lifeguard perch watching the patrons in the pool, observing them for their safety. She noted she is grateful for the position of lifeguard and enjoys being at the pool.

Steier said she was accepted at Penn State University and plans to study environmental resource management.

Stevie Selberain, another NAHS June 2 graduate and lifeguard at the pool, said she plans to attend Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina to study marine science.

Pool patrons Ian Stiles, Jordan Martinez, Adrin Dean and Liliana Cordoba, of Northampton, said they enjoyed their first day at the pool and expect many pool visits over the summer. They all said, as their bright smiles indicated, they were having fun.

Sonia Stiles, of Northampton, was with her children and held her young son Victor, who appeared to be slowly growing fond of the pool.

Kensie Masasevich, Amayia Montalvan and Kalei Ginthner, who recently moved to Northampton, said they enjoy living in the borough and couldn’t wait for the pool’s opening day. They were impressed with the pool, its size and comfortable ambience of the grounds.

The concession stand was buzzing at times as employees in the stand were cheerfully serving patrons. Burgers, hot dogs, mozzarella sticks, pierogies, a variety of candy and soft drinks were available for purchase.

It seems the pool may be the place to hang out over the summer.
