Coplay successful in staffing Parkway Pool

At the June 13 Coplay Borough Council meeting, it was reported the borough secured enough lifeguards to open the municipal pool six days a week. The pool will be open Tuesdays through Sundays.

Councilman Mark Molitoris, who leads the parks and recreation committee, thanked Councilman Michael Dreisbach, who reached out to Northampton Borough to try and obtain additional guards since Northampton already reached its required amount.

Council approved the motion to hire the new lifeguards.

In other business, a motion was made to approve a feasibility study proposal in the amount of $9,800 at the Commitment to Family and Community building on Cherry Street. The study will determine if the building can be the future home of the borough police station.

At an earlier meeting, police Chief Ryan Emerich indicated the current police station could use improvements and upgrades, and a suggestion was made to explore using the Cherry Street building as the new station site.

Council approved the study, which will be conducted by an engineering firm.

A motion was made to approve the advertisement of the 2022 completed annual audit and financial report conducted by Kirk Summa & Co. LLP, the borough auditor. This motion carried.

Approval was granted by council to approve ordinance 859, adding an additional handicap parking space at 51 S. Third St.

In two separate votes, council approved to accept the resignation of Tiffany Benson and Keith Sodl from the park and recreation committee.

Councilman Rick Kern reported the borough will apply for a multimodal grant this summer. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s website, funds received from a multimodal grant can be used for “development, rehabilitation and enhancement of transportation to existing communities.”

This type of grant would require a 30% match provided by the grant recipient. A street study was recently conducted in the borough, and if received, a grant like this would be put toward fixing and paving the borough streets.

Coplay Public Library received a grant that will be used to install new doors. However, the bid received for the installation of the doors is higher than the amount of money received for the project. The borough requested additional funds from the county to assist in this expense and is waiting to hear an update on this inquiry.

Borough council will hold a workshop meeting 7 p.m. July 5 in borough hall, 98 S. Fourth St. Note this meeting has been moved due to the Fourth of July holiday.
