A fire believed to be caused by a lightning strike June 16 has displaced 38 people from their homes in Willow Ridge Apartments, Allen Township.

An afternoon storm blew through the area that day, causing some flooded streets and even a confirmed tornado near Philadelphia.

It is believed lightning struck this apartment building, in the 400 block of Harrison Court.

Multiple fire departments and emergency services responded to the scene. Crews worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which quickly consumed the entire building and collapsed the second floor.

There were no injuries reported.

The American Red Cross is assisting residents displaced by the fire, which affected 16 apartments.

According to the Red Cross, “Five members of the Red Cross Disaster Action Team responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m. to provide comfort, care and emergency assistance to the affected residents for temporary lodging, food, clothing and other immediate needs.

“The Red Cross also served dinner to the affected residents in the hours after the fire,” according to a news release by the agency. “Red Cross caseworkers will continue to help the residents in the days and weeks ahead by working with community partners to ensure the residents receive the resources they need to recover from this disaster.”

Allen Township Fire Company No. 1 posted a note of appreciation on Facebook, acknowledging the emergency personnel who responded to the fire.

Departments responding included Northampton, East Allen Township, North Catasauqua, Catasauqua, Lehigh Township, Coplay, Bath, Hanover Township, Hecktown, Nancy Run, Bethlehem Township, Greenawalds, Nazareth, Neffs, Palmer, Klecknersville and Walnutport.

Northampton Regional EMS also assisted, as did Pennsylvania State Police, Northampton County 911 Center, Northampton County and Allen Township EMS, municipal officials and fire police personnel from several departments.
