Theater Review: NCC’s ‘The Prom’ a cause celebre

There was a time when the most controversial aspect of attending a high school prom may have had to do with not color-coordinating the corsage with the prom gown.

The musical comedy, “The Prom,” has more substantive concerns, which, in the fictional storyline, bring national publicity.

“The Prom,” through June 18, Lipkin Theatre, Northampton Community College Summer Theatre, Bethlehem Township, is a comical look at culture clashes. The show brings together an energetic cast with entertaining results. The June 11 performance was seen for this review.

In “The Prom,” four actors are in search of a publicity gimmick after negative reviews close their Broadway show. They hear about a Midwest high school not allowing two girls to attend a prom together. The Broadway actors determine it’s just the ticket.

The actors, Barry Glickman (Bill Mutimer), Dee Dee Allen (Valerie A. Hill), Trent Oliver (Michael Mottram) and Angie Dickinson (Jenny Bianchini), travel to Indiana where a prom was canceled because a student, Emma Nolan (Katelyn Morgan), wanted to bring her girlfriend, Alyssa Greene (Myriam Zamy), to the prom.

The high school principal Mr. Hawkins, (Marcell McKenzie), backs Emma, but Alyssa’s mother, Mrs. Greene (Nikki Cohen), who heads the Parent Teachers Association, won’t allow her daughter to attend the prom with Emma. The Broadway stars turn the prom into a cause celebre.

“The Prom” has book and lyrics by Chad Beguelin, book by Bob Martin and music by Matthew Sklar based on an original concept by Jack Viertel. The 2018 Broadway production received seven Tony Award nominations.

The NCC production of “The Prom” is directed by Bill Mutimer, Head of the NCC Theatre Department and NCC Summer Music Theatre Producing Artistic Director; musical director is Chad Miller, choreography is by Tina Williams, costumer is Amber Smith and technical director-sets, sound and lighting design is Brad Oliveira.

“The Prom” is an amusing show with enjoyable songs and solid vocals, performances and choreography.

The harmonies in the opening number reprise, “Changing Lives,” are especially lovely by Mutimer, Hill, Bianchini and Mottram.

Morgan has a splendid voice, and shines in her solo numbers, “Just Breathe” and “Unruly Heart.”

Zamy has a wonderful voice, most memorable in “Alyssa Greene.”

Morgan and Zamy are terrific in their duet, “Dance With You.”

Bianchini charms vocally and in choreography for “Zazz,” with Morgan.

Hall has a powerful and sensitive voice in her showcase numbers, “It’s Not About Me” and “The Lady’s Improving.”

Mutimer has an endearing solo with “Barry Is Going To Prom.”

McKenzie is in fine voice, evidenced in “We Look To You.”

Mottram leads a rousing “Love, Thy Neighbor.”

“Changing Lives, Act II” is a tour de force ensemble number, only topped by the finale, “It’s Time To Dance,” by the entire Company, which will have you clapping along enthusiastically.

The 14-piece orchestra adds to the dynamics of these and other production numbers.

Standouts in the large cast are Jordan Gold (Kaylee), Lydia Walker (Shelby) and Kevin Gaughenbaugh (Sheldon).

The cast includes Max Wetherhold, Jacob Greening, Amanda Michelle Alfano, Andy Van Antwerp, Josh Crowley, Tessa DeJesus, Isaiah Ellebeby, Justin Ferguson, Janae Gray, Aidan King, Cade Kocher, Jane Lui, Mina/Will Price, Sieanna Rahatt, Michael J. Sheridan, Faith Stack, Connor Sternberg and Mason Wold.

Prom season may have faded into the horizon in the rear-view mirror for many of us. “The Prom” can teach us some new steps and provide a view of the road ahead.
