Silberman sisters excel for Hounds
Salisbury High School graduates Emily and Marcie Silberman just completed their first season playing softball together at Moravian University, finishing the 2023 campaign nearly two weeks ago in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in Texas.
The Greyhounds finished the NCAA Division III Tournament tied for fifth out of the 62 teams and closed out the year with a 38-12 record, a Landmark Conference championship and Regional and Super Regional titles.
“We had a very successful season,” said Emily Silberman, a junior. “If you asked any of us after our spring break how we saw the rest of the season going, no one would have said we will finish fifth in the nation.
“We worked very hard to get to where we ended. We have a very young team, so for us to accomplish a conference championship, regional championship and Super Regional championship is something we never expected, but definitely deserved. We worked incredibly hard this season.”
Emily was a regular in the lineup, playing in 49 of the 50 games this season, finishing with a .326 batting average, 43 hits and 35 RBIs, as a utility player/designated hitter. Her sister, freshman Marcie Silberman, had a breakout first collegiate season. The catcher batted .348 with 40 hits and 31 RBIs in 41 games.
“Coming in my first year is definitely overwhelming, but I was super excited with the opportunities I had and did all I could to be productive for the team,” said Marcie. “Winning the conference was a great start to our long run in post season. The experience of regionals, supers and the World Series was like no other.”
In her three years so far at Moravian, Emily has been a key cog to a program that has won two conference championships and played in the NCAA Tournament twice.
Marcie has been around the program and knows all about its success because of her sister, and she wanted to be a part of it when the opportunity presented itself after graduating from Salisbury in 2022.
“I chose Moravian because it was close to home and felt like the right place to be,” Marcie said. “Salisbury is a small school, so I wanted to go somewhere that felt sort of similar to that. I also have my sister and other friends on the softball team that I’ve known for years, and I know the programs history, so it was a no-brainer.”
Emily saw the talent her sister had and knew she would be a collegiate student-athlete one day. She’s glad that she decided to join her in Bethlehem.
“Playing with my sister is definitely a special experience,” said Emily. “We have played together before, but playing in college together is different.
“I remember watching her when she was 10 years old, and now she is commanding the field as Moravian’s catcher. She has come so far, and I am very blessed to be able to experience all that she has accomplished and will accomplish as her sister and teammate.”
After looking back on one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2023, the Greyhounds, behind the Silberman sisters, are poised for another strong season in 2024.
“Coming back as a senior, I am very excited for this upcoming season,” Emily said. “Most of our team is coming back, which means everyone will be pushing each other and themselves to get back to the World Series.
“I think with the group we have coming back and the freshmen we have coming in, we will have another successful season.”
