Lower Macungie starts LVL season at 2-3

The Lower Macungie Lehigh Valley Legion baseball team was 2-3 after its first five games of the 2023 season. The Mustangs were tied for fourth place in the eight-team league as of Sunday’s games.

Here’s a look at the team’s first five league games and one nonleague matchup.

Tuesday, May 30

No. Valley-Lower Mac

The Chargers took an 8-0 lead in the second inning en route to a 9-1 in both teams’ season opener.

Zachary McEllory went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs while driving in a run and scoring his team’s only run of the game.

Northern Valley’s Nick Scott went 2-for-2 in the win as pitchers Shaun O’Donnell (4 innings pitched, 10 strike outs, no walks, 1 earned run) and Chase Moyer (3 IP, 1 hit, 3 K) combined to allow just five hits and one run.

Wednesday, May 31

Lower Mac-Allentown

Allentown pitcher Benjamin Moretz allowed two hits while striking out eight batters over seven innings of a 3-1 win.

Michael Kernechel and Joseph Cook had hits in the game for Lower Mac. Starter Drew McGeehan allowed just four hits over 4.2 innings while striking out five batters and walking one.

Thursday, June 1

Lower Mac-Salisbury

Lower Macungie got in the win column with a 10-5 triumph over Salisbury.

The Mustangs scored two runs in each of the first two innings then another three in the third for an early 7-1 lead.

Joseph Cook went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of runs in the game. Zachary McEllroy was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Tyler Geist was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI as the Mustangs belted 11 hits in the win.

Ryan Latchford allowed five hits and four runs over six innings and Geist pitched a one-hit seventh inning, striking out two batters.

Saturday, June 3

Lower Mac-Reading

Lower Macungie traveled to George Field for a game nonleague game against Reading and came away with a 4-3 win.

The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the first innings when Joseph Cook and Tyler Geist led off with singles and scored on sacrifice flies by Zachary McEllroy and Michael Kernechel, respectively.

Reading got a run in the bottom of the third inning before Lower Mac got one in the fifth when Ian Cederberg singled to drive on D Rholsen for a 3-1 lead.

A Ryan Bennet single in the sixth inning scored Karson Krasley and gave the Mustangs a 4-1 lead.

Reading scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a walk, a single and an error.

Cook got the win, pitching five innings and allowing four hits and one run while striking out six and walking two batters.

Tuesday, June 6

Carbon Monarchs-Lower Mac

Lower Macungie won its third straight game as Tyler Geist pitched six shut out innings in a 7-0 win over the Carbon Monarchs.

Geist allowed five hits while striking out five batters and walking none to earn the win. He also went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and one run. Kaden Muller was 2-for-3 in the game. Latchford went 2-for-2.

Thursday, June 8

South Parkland-Lower Mac

Unbeaten South Parkland topped Lower Macungie 10-1 to end the Mustangs’ win streak.

John Friday (5 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 6 BB) and Michael Kohler (2 IP, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB) combined to throw a two-hitter, while the Trojans had seven hits and walked 10 times in the game.

Dayne Schmidt and Anthony McWhinney had the two hits for Lower Mac.

Andrew Klotz and Kurt Meehan had two hits each for the Trojans. Meehan also drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.
