Falcons win four of first seven summer games
Last season, the Salisbury High School boys basketball team found it difficult to earn victories on the court. The Falcons had a losing season, which is unlike the program and its winning standards. But this summer, Salisbury has begun putting last season in the rearview mirror quickly and looking toward the 2023-24 winter season.
The Falcons have opened up play in the Lehigh Valley summer league by winning four of their first seven games, including two in-a-row last week.
“Summer league has been going well so far,” said Salisbury head coach Jason Weaver. “Our varsity team is 4-3 overall and the JV squad is undefeated at 4-0. We have been much more competitive as a team this year and we have been getting a good number of players coming to the games which is good to see.”
Albeit in shorter-timed summer league games, the Salisbury offense has been scoring at a fast pace. Last Tuesday, June 6, the Falcons defeated Lehighton 58-39 and then took down Bethlehem Christian 53-49 two nights later. Jairo Suarez led Salisbury with 13 points on Tuesday and Steven Lozada had a team-high 10 points on Thursday.
“We are playing well offensively,” Weaver said. “Guys are being aggressive and looking to attack on offense and gaining more confidence in their offensive abilities. Seeing the ball go through the net has been good for our confidence.”
Weaver highlighted three underclassmen who have been stepping up into newer roles as contributors to the team.
“Stephen Lozada, Drew Petrie and Bryan Gonzalez are three incoming sophomores who have been playing well during this summer period,” said Weaver. “They are getting great experience and getting used to the varsity game more and more each game. They will be a big help to us come the winter season.”
Weaver knows he has a talented group and hopes to see others step up this summer to show what they can do.
“There are a lot of players that can compete at the varsity level,” Weaver said. “Each player brings something different to the court. That competition at practice and throughout the summer will only make us better come to the winter season.”
