Hozza honored

Moravian University golf student-athletes senior Andrew Hozza (Northampton HS) and men’s lacrosse student-athletes graduate student Connor James (Piscataway, N.J.), senior Jack Bakey (Ridley Park, Pa.) and sophomores Steven Salica (Holbrook, N.J.) and Kyle Weiss (Franklin Township, N.J.) have been honored on the 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Men’s At-Large Team for NCAA Division III schools.

To be eligible for CSC Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.50 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter or significant reserve. Moravian has had 56 Greyhounds named CSC Academic All-Americans®. The at-large program honors student-athletes in the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo and wrestling for men.

By making the All-District Team, the quintet is now forwarded onto the national ballot to try for CSC Academic All-America® accolades, which will be announced Wednesday, June 21.

The Greyhound golf program finished in a tie for third at the 2023 Landmark Conference Championships. This spring, Moravian’s men’s lacrosse program had a 7-8 record while going 3-4 in Landmark Conference action.

Hozza, a math/English major with a midlevel education certification and a 3.82 grade-point average, earned his first career postseason honor after taking fourth of the 40 golfers with a 36-hole score of 152 at the Landmark Conference Championships for All-Conference First Team accolades. Hozza had a one-over par round of 71 in the second round Saturday, shooting 10 strokes better than his opening round to move into position for All-Conference honors.

Hozza averaged 79.13 strokes per round over 16 rounds this spring including a season-low round of 70 and one medalist honor. He completed his golfing career with a career average of 80.61 over 42.5 rounds. When he isn’t golfing, Hozza starts for the Moravian men’s tennis team where he was 5-0 in singles action this year and 25-1 over his career. Hozza was selected the 2023 Moravian Most Outstanding Senior Male Athlete award winner. Hozza made Moravian’s Dean’s Honors List seven times as well as being a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society. He is a six-time member of the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, three times for both men’s golf and men’s tennis.
