Comprehensive plan for township pools in progress

At the June 12 meeting, the Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners discussed the status of the township’s three pools, only one of which will open this season.

Hokendauqua’s Parkview Pool is scheduled to open this weekend.

The township’s other two pools - Cementon and Jefferson, in Fullerton - will not be open again this season.

Commissioners President Joe Marx reported a comprehensive parks and recreation plan is being conducted for Jefferson Pool to determine the feasibility of repairing or replacing the pool.

A leak at Cementon Pool was discovered last year. The cost for the repair is $750,000. A comprehensive plan is being done for that pool as well.

“There’s going to be some hard decisions made on whether this township can support three swimming pools with a population of 30,000,” Marx said.

Lifeguard staffing is also an issue facing not only the township, but area municipalities as well. The salary is part of the struggle as these community pools compete for lifeguard coverage with Dorney Park, which reportedly offers higher wages.

Marx stressed the policy prohibiting coolers being brought into the township pool will be enforced at the discretion of pool staff. This is to help support the concession stand, which will be open.

The board addressed illegal dirt bike and ATV use in the township as well.

According to Mark Mazzitelli, assistant police chief, Whitehall is a part of a regional task force created to address this issue. The township also has two police motorcycles on back order, which are expected to help curb the issue.

In other business, the board approved two purchases for the public works department - a 2023 Freightliner day cab tractor and a detachable gooseneck trailer.

There will be a special meeting June 19 to address motions regarding farmland preservation. The meeting is open to the public.

The commissioners will meet for a workshop 7 p.m. July 3 in the municipal building, 3219 MacArthur Road.
