19th SouthSide Film Festival back with global cinema

The 19th SouthSide Film Festival gets underway with an opening recepton June 13 and the opening screening of the documentary film, “Still Working 9 to 5.”

The SSFF begins with a reception, 6:30 p.m. June 13, National Museum of Industrial History, 602 E. Third St., Bethlehem.

From there, in the SSFF tradition, there’s a procession to the first screening, “Still Workng 9 to 5,” 7:30 p.m. June 13, Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, 321 E. Third St., Bethlehem.

The annual festival brings films and filmmakers from around the United States and the world to Bethlehem.

The hit film comedy, “9 to 5,” starring Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman, was released in 1980.

“Still Working 9 to 5,” directed by Camille Hardman and Gary Lane, looks at inequality in the workplace. The documentary, which has received awards at film festivals, includes interviews with Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, Allison Janney, Lilly Tomlin, Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman, Ann Roth, Joe Mantello and Arianna Huffington.

SSFF venues, in addition to Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, include Touchstone Theatre, 321 E. Fourth St., Bethlehem; National Museum of Industrial History, 602 E. Second St., Bethlehem, Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas, 101 Founders Way, SteelStacks, Bethlehem, and Festival headquarters, Deja Brew, 101 W, Fourth St., Bethlehem.

SSFF screens shorts, features, animation films, documentary films and narrative fiction films. The screenings are often in blocks of similar genres. Many of the films are screened more than once.

The SSFF is run by the nonprofit SouthSide Film Institute, with its board of directors, including Jennifer Cotto, Festival Director; Jeff Vaclavik, Board President; Glenn Koehler, Board Vice President; Carol J. Gilmore, Board Secretary; Gary Krall, Board Treasurer; Lorraine M. Pasquali, Volunteer Coordinator, and Benjamin Bertalan, Dennis Douvanis and Ann Knerr.
