Juvenile admits to food tampering at Giant store in Lower Macungie Township

In news release dated June 2, Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin announced the resolution of a juvenile case involving a former Giant grocery store employee charged with inserting sewing needles into various food items at a Giant location in Lower Macungie Township.

According to authorities, the juvenile appeared in juvenile court June 1 and admitted to the allegations.

The news release provided the following details:

On April 19, Pennsylvania State Police troopers from the Fogelsville station were called to Giant, 7150 Hamilton Blvd., for a report of food tampering.

“An investigation revealed the juvenile put needles in various food items,” according to the news release.

No one was hurt as a result of the incident.

It was earlier reported the tampering was discovered as customers returned damaged products to the store.

On April 24, the juvenile was charged with three counts each of recklessly endangering another person; a misdemeanor of the second degree and one count of criminal mischief, described by authorities as a summary offense.

The news release ends as follows.

“The matter has been disposed of by the juvenile court and no further information can or will be released because to do so would violate the Juvenile Act.”

Store items reportedly impacted by the tampering included King Hawaiian bread rolls, StarKist Tuna Light sold in the 2.6 ounce pouch and larger, bagged vegetables and individual Tastykake packaging.

The juvenile was an employee at Giant at the time of the incident, according to authorities.
