Parkland girls lax will graduate 12 seniors
Although the Parkland High School girls lacrosse team did not win either the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference or District 11 3A championships during the 2023 season, the Trojans still had many positive achievements and success, according to head coach Brittaney Costigan.
“I think we achieved a lot this season and pushed ourselves in new ways,” said Costigan. “I’m very proud of how the girls handled themselves and they left it all on the field when it counted.”
There were a number of milestones and team accomplishments that could be mentioned, but Costigan had one that stuck out that she will always remember about this season.
“Our Freedom game during the regular season was a season-high for us when a lot of pieces came together, and you could tell from the girls play that we would win that game,” Costigan said. “My favorite moments are definitely always some of the smaller moments during practices and games.”
While the 16-15 victory over the Patriots back on April 25 was a top highlight of the 2023 season, the next matchup between the two teams ended in a different way, with Freedom getting the better of the Trojans, 19-5, in the district quarterfinal round. Ella Estaban and Riley Santa-Anna each finished with two goals, while Anna Sensinger added a goal. Milla Hahn contributed two assists. Hailey Smith made eight saves.
“Freedom is a very skilled team with a dynamic midfield of three really good players,” said Costigan. “They are great on the draw and really know how to play off of their success there.”
The Trojans will graduate a large senior class, consisting of 12 players. Hannah Car, Mae Cook, Morgan Dobil, Esteban, Hannah Fredrich, Olivia Habash, Taylor Heller, Isabel McNevin, Kayla McNevin, Riley Petronio, Taryn Poremba and Santa-Anna make up the group of seniors.
“We had a lot of seniors this year that brought their leadership and passion for the sport and the team every time they stepped on the field,” Costigan said. “They were great role models for the underclassmen to look up to.”
Even with a high number of players leaving the program due to graduation, Costigan is still excited for who she has coming back as Parkland looks to get back to championship games.
“While having a large group of seniors, we also have a lot of underclassmen with tons of natural athleticism and talent,” said Costigan. “I’m excited to continue to watch them, and their game, develop next year.”
