Kids have solid group set to return

Northampton’s 13-3 loss to Liberty in a District 11 Class 6A semifinals marked the end to the Konkrete Kids’ season, but it also marked a season filled with accomplishments that shouldn’t be overlooked.

For the 12th straight season, the Kids qualified for the district playoffs, and they also made a visit to the East Penn Conference (EPC) playoffs. Their appearance in the semifinals was their first since 2015. The Kids also hit .342 as a team and posted a 3.50 staff ERA.

Head coach Mick Sugra noted how he and his team can be appreciative of their highlights this season.

“To be able to qualify for districts for 12 straight years is awesome,” he beamed. “We managed to win 14 games playing the toughest of all schedules in the area. We played Nazareth, Liberty, and Pocono Mountain East out of our division, and we also played North Pocono, which always is a good team, and Southern Lehigh.

“We had a great game from Evan Hughes, who totally shutdown Emmaus in our first-round game. We did a lot of good things this year.”

The Kids will lose six seniors – Hughes and fellow pitcher Owen Laury, third baseman Matt Merced, infielder Dylan Fosko, and outfielders Ian Onuschak and Nate Wofle. Hughes will continue his career at York College, while Fosko has committed to Moravian.

“They were all very integral to our program,” said Sugra. “Hughes and Laury did an outstanding job on the mound, and Merced was solid at third. Onuschak and Wolfe manned the outfield.”

The Kids will return outfielder Logan Higgins, pitchers Sam Erschen and Erik Castro, infielders Mason Haupt, Jed Colyer, and Adrian Maltese, along with catchers Isaiah Alicea and Gavin Pychinka.

“We got a good nucleus coming back,” added Sugra. “Gavin Pychinka had a huge year, and Erick Castro built up his innings. Mason Haupt played all 23 games at second base.”

Sugra expects his team to be back in the running next season.

“We have some key people back, and we got a good group of underclassmen,” he stated. “We’ll see what happens.”
