Emmaus baseball falls to K-Kids in district playoffs

The Emmaus High School baseball team had an uncharacteristic ending to its 2023 season.

The fifth-seeded Green Hornets were shutout by fourth-seeded Northampton, 9-0, last Wednesday in the District 11 6A quarterfinal round at Northampton High School.

Emmaus (14-9 overall), which finished with just one hit, went into the offseason without any championships for the first time since 2020. The Green Hornets won the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference title the last two years and won districts in 2021 as well.

Head coach Jeremy Haas reflected on the season that was and what his team sought out for.

“At the start of the season we set three goals for our team: Get better every day, qualify for our league tournament and qualify for our district tournament,” said Haas. “We accomplished all three of our goals. Ultimately, we weren’t the team we needed to be to have more postseason success.”

Despite the disappointing finish to the season, Emmaus still had plenty of positive experiences in 2023.

“There were two incredible experiences our team had this year,” Haas said. “The one was going to see our former player, Wyatt Henseler, play in a doubleheader for the University of Pennsylvania. The other was taking our entire program to volunteer at the Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley. Going to the Miracle League was my favorite day in my nine years at Emmaus.”

Emmaus has seven seniors that are graduating this year. The list includes Joe Cook, TJ Geist, Ryan Latchford, Zachary McEllroy, Anthony McWhinney, Jackson Merk and Ben Yartymyk. They have seen a ton of success in green and gold.

“This group of seniors helped our program win 36 games over the last two years,” said Haas. “They learned to be great leaders, they will be missed.”

Despite the talented senior group leaving the program, Haas has a lot of experience and talent returning in 2024 in hopes of getting back to winning trophies.

“We have a large senior class this season,” Haas said. “Many of them have been members of championship teams here at Emmaus. Collectively, we will all need to have a great offseason to put in ourselves in a position to compete for championships next year. Everything is in front of us.”
