Volunteer opportunities
Help build a youth’s potential by mentoring through sports. Mentors meet once a month for nine months with their mentee. All activities are organized and facilitated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lehigh Valley. There is no cost to participate. Activities include attending sporting events (like the Phantoms or a college basketball game) or participating in sports activities (like a kickball game or the batting cages). Colonial Foodways volunteers engage visitors with the history of Burnside Plantation through live cooking demonstrations in the summer kitchen. Volunteers will demonstrate open hearth cooking practices and recreate 18th and early 19th century recipes in period attire and answer visitor questions about early cooking and life on a colonial-era farm. Earn a Bike is an opportunity to teach life lessons through bicycle mechanics. Community Bike Works volunteers will meet 12 times 4-6 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday in both the East Allentown and Franklin Park locations. No experience necessary. Background checks required. In the spirit of National Trails Day join the DLNHC and Lehigh Gorge State Park to clean up Locks 28 and 29 along the D&L Trail in White Haven 9 a.m. to noon June 3. It is roughly a quarter mile round trip walk to Lock 29 and just shy of a half mile round trip walk to Lock 28. Minimum age to volunteer is 16 or 14 with adult.
