Funds requested for firefighter physicals

The Upper Milford Township Board of Supervisors approved a motion to join with Lehigh County to complete an out of order preservation for 4246 Main Road W., Emmaus, during its May 18 meeting.

The motion is based on a recommendation sent to the supervisors by Brian Miller from the open space committee.

Under the agreement, the township will pay two-thirds the cost of the easement, with the county paying the other third. A survey will be conducted to determine costs.

The supervisors agreed to post a 2008 John Deere 544J high lift wheel loader on Municibid for sale.

Township Manager Bud Carter explained that with approval, the ad will be placed in the newspaper directing interested bidders to Municibid.

“The winning bid will then be presented to the board at an upcoming board meeting for your approval,” Carter explained to the supervisors.

Emergency Services Committee Secretary Joseph Terrible wrote to the supervisors requesting money be allocated in the 2024 budget to cover 13 to 14 physicals for each fire company. It is estimated each exam will cost a little over $400, exclusive of substance abuse testing.

The supervisors were provided information from St. Luke’s about substance abuse testing, detailing costs which can vary between $30-60 per individual, depending on the extent of testing and where they are analyzed.

Estimated costs for these recommendations are $6,000 per fire company.

The supervisors decided to take this under consideration for now.
