Union Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, is inaugurating a new musical ministry for children and adults with special needs.

Church member Jackie Bucks explains music has always been an important part of her life.

She was looking for a way to share music experiences with some of her students who have special needs.

Bucks conducted online research and found the Hearts for Music Special Needs Orchestra.

She contacted Kitrael Chin, the president and artistic director, who offered to take Union Lutheran under the wings of his nonprofit organization.

On May 27, Chin will present information and demonstration sessions for the special needs community, 11 a.m. to noon, and 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The day will end with a benefit concert to support the new endeavor.

A goal of the music experience is to transform disabilities into abilities.

In the special needs orchestra, participants use digital iPads, acoustic instruments and keyboards to learn and perform simplified symphonic works.

Bucks has become the Pennsylvania Director of Hearts for Music.

Call 610-767-6884 for more information.

The benefit concert 6:30 p.m. May 27 will include Dolcetto, the Glenn Hofmann Trio, Valley Voices Community Choir, Young People’s Philharmonic, the Union Lutheran praise band, and more.

There is a fee for tickets.
