School board members hear latest budget numbers

At the May 22 Whitehall-Coplay School Board meeting, board members finalized a number of items in preparation for the end of the 2023 school year.

An updated 2023-24 budget was presented. The budget includes a 2.9% increase from last year. This is reportedly the lowest increase since the 2017-18 school year.

It was noted substantial reductions were made since the last meeting, primarily regarding limiting grounds improvements to reduce spending.

The board is still waiting to see how the state budget will impact the district.

The final version of the budget will be voted on at a special meeting 4 p.m. June 12.

In other business, the board nominated and elected George Williams to the office of treasurer for the 2023-24 school year. He was also the treasurer for the 2022-23 school year.

The board expressed its gratitude to the participating National Police Week sponsors that donated breakfast and/or lunch to officers in the school district. Sponsors included Egypt Star Bakery, Weis Foods, Giant Foods, Olive Garden, Wawa and Mission BBQ. Several schools in the district played host to these events.

A special thank you was also given to Staples of Whitehall for the donation of eight boxes of school supplies.
