NAHS’ Matthew Gunia places third in Biology Olympics

The 38th annual Biology Olympics competition was held at Cedar Crest College April 14. A team of five Northampton Area High School students competed against seven other area districts in group events, such as experimental design, a biology scavenger hunt and biology quiz bowl. The participating districts included NAHS, Whitehall High School, Parkland High School, Emmaus High School, Liberty High School, Southern Lehigh High School, Nazareth High School and Pocono Mountain East High School.

The NAHS students, all Class of 2023 members, are as follows: Mary Namy, cells and neuroscience; Zayna Shadid, medical biology and physiology; Gizem Horuz, molecular biology and classical genetics; Matthew Gunia, evolution and organismal biology; and Ian Ventresca, conservation biology and ecology.

Gunia placed third in his individual event category.
