PHS softball caps regular season with win over Emmaus

The Parkland High School softball team concluded its regular season and played some of its best softball of the year during the finals weeks of the season. The Trojans won four of their last five games to finish out the schedule as they prepare for the postseason.

Parkland finished the regular season with a 9-10 overall record and was 9-7 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The Trojans missed out on the EPC tournament, which begins this week, but qualified for the District 11 6A tournament, which starts in two weeks.

To begin the week last week, the Trojans defeated the two-time defending district champion Northampton, 4-2, on the road last Monday, May 1. They then went out of conference and fell at home to Abington Heights, 5-3, last Friday. The following day, in the regular season finale, Parkland got some revenge on rival Emmaus and beat the Hornets 6-3 to send the Parkland seniors off their home field with a win one last time.

Against the Kids, the Trojans were outhit 9-6, but were aided by three defensive errors by the Northampton defense. After a scoreless first inning, the teams traded a run in the second and then Parkland scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Evelyn Montone went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to pace the lineup. Cecilia Quiroz had a hit and two RBIs and Addison Fritzinger recorded a hit and an RBI. Brenna Zavecz and Morgan Schultz both finished with a hit and a run scored. Allison Hunsberger went the complete game inside the circle and gave up just the two runs to earn the victory.

Abington scored two runs in its first at-bats. Following a run by Parkland in the second, the Comets tacked on another in the third, but the Trojans had a run cross home in both the fifth and sixth innings to tie the score as the game went to extra innings. Abington, however, scored twice in the top of the eighth and got three outs without giving up a run in the bottom-half.

Maria Moore led the way with two hits and an RBI. Hunsberger also had a hit and an RBI.

Parkland took control of the game with Emmaus in the middle innings, scoring two runs in the second and fourth innings and one sandwiched in between in the third. The Hornets rallied when their backs were against the wall with three runs in the seventh, but Hunsberger buckled down and got the outs to finish out the win.

Zavecz ended the day with a game-high three hits. Hunsberger and Anna Hauff-Belletieri both had two hits.
