It might be a good thing for the Parkland High School girls lacrosse team that the regular season has finished up. The Trojans dropped their last three games of the regular season, including both last week.
They did well enough, however, to qualify for both the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 3A tournaments. Parkland can now turn its attention to the postseason, which begins this week, and head coach Brittaney Costigan knows the talent her team has to compete for titles.
“We had a lot of great successes this season and gave glimpses of all the skill we truly possess,” said Costigan. “Hopefully in our postseason we will show this skill all the way through. Coming out and showing everyone all the skill that we have and all that we are truly capable of. Hopefully those demonstrations will take us all the way through the post season.”
Parkland lost to Emmaus 20-8 last Monday, May 1, and then was downed in nonconference play, 19-7, to Northwestern Lehigh this past Thursday. Both games were at home. While the Trojans dropped two games to finish the regular season, the season as a whole has been a success so far, and Costigan sees it in her team.
“Our athleticism could be seen all across the field,” Costigan said. “Our attack had multiple threats and a composed game thanks to our upcoming classmen leadership: Gigi Leonzi, Hannah Car, Ella Esteban, and Riley Santa-Anna. Our defense worked hard and pushed themselves every game.”
There were a couple of individual standout performances this season and players that competed at a high level for Parkland.
“We had some players hit some individual milestones: Hailey Smith 100 career saves and Gigi Leonzi 100 career goals,” said Costigan. “Every player was a contributor and helped to get us to achieve all that we have this season so far.”
Parkland finished 6-9 overall and 5-3 in the EPC. The Trojans will take on the top seed, Pleasant Valley in the EPC semifinal round Thursday night at Northampton High School.
