Parkland beats EHS, caps unbeaten regular season
The Parkland High School boys volleyball team continued its winning ways last week, taking three matches, two in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and another out of conference. In doing so, the Trojans finished the 2023 regular season unbeaten.
“Finishing unbeaten is great for our confidence,” said Parkland head coach Scott Trumbauer. “The guys know they can compete with everyone in the league and district. But moving forward, everyone knows what we are capable of and can learn from it, so we have to push ourselves to continue to improve and play at a high level against everyone we face from here on out.”
Parkland defeated Northampton on the road last Monday, May 1, then won home matches against Emmaus on Thursday and Delaware Valley on Friday, all in three sets.
The Trojans defeated the Kids 25-15, 25-10 and 25-14. Chase Robbins and Owen Rodgers both led the attack with 12 kills and combined for 18 digs and five blocks. Kumayl Soonasra contributed 28 assists and Alexander Wilby and Ahmad Jaffer had five digs.
Against the Hornets, Parkland won 25-13, 25-21 and 25-20. Josh Nation recorded a team-high 15 kills and added five digs and two aces. Robbins tallied 13 kills and eight digs. Will Stiles finished with 39 assists and Luke Smith added six kills and five blocks.
In the match with the Warriors, the Trojans came out on top by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-14. Robbins paced the offense with 12 kills and had six digs. Rodgers recorded seven kills and Nation tallied six kills and six digs.
Trumbauer has been pleased with the way the offense has performed the last couple of weeks.
“We have been passing really well which has helped out offense get into rhythm,” Trumbauer said. “Ahmad has been playing really well in serve receive and defensively, as has Chase. Having the two of them covering the majority of the court has been an incredible benefit.”
Parkland finished the regular season with a 15-0 overall record and a 12-0 mark in the conference, one game ahead of second place Emmaus. The Trojans secured the top seed in this week’s EPC tournament and received a bye into the semifinal round where it will take on the winner of fourth-seeded Liberty against fifth-seeded Whitehall Thursday night at Allen.
“It’s always a great time of the season to see the team’s hard work put to the test with medals and trophies on the line,” said Trumbauer.
Robbins was named to the EPC First Team, Smith was named to the Second Team, and Jaffer, Stiles and Nation all earned spots on the Third Team.
“These guys have been playing well all year,” Trumbauer said. “Chase has been the statistical and team leader all year. His contributions have been impressive considering teams knew he would be our go-to all season, but he continues to put up great numbers.”
