EHS softball knocks off unbeaten Zephs

The Emmaus High School softball team had an up-and-down in the final week of the 2023 regular season.

The Green Hornets extended their season-long win streak to 11 games with two victories, but they dropped the season finale to rival Parkland.

Emmaus got some revenge from a loss earlier in the year as it got the better of Whitehall, 6-0, last Tuesday, May 2, in the final home game of the season. The Hornets lost to the Zephyrs 4-3 back in late March.

The same thing happened with Northampton as Emmaus beat the Kids two weeks ago after falling to them early in the season. Emmaus then beat Allen on the road Thursday before falling to the Trojans 6-3 this past Saturday at Parkland High School.

Against Whitehall, the Emmaus lineup finished with 10 hits, led by Avaeha Schwab, who had two hits and two RBIs, and Shayla Morgan, who also tallied two hits while scoring two runs. Mason Roselli recorded a hit and two RBIs.

While the Green Hornet bats were hot, Whitehall’s was not, thanks to starting pitcher Danica Barthol, who threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits, striking out nine batters to give the Zephyrs their first loss in the conference.

All six runs came within the first three innings as Emmaus scored three in the bottom of the first, two in the second and the final one in the third.

In the game at the Trojans, Emmaus attempted a late-inning comeback as it found itself behind 6-0 entering the seventh inning, but was only able to have three runners cross home plate.

Parkland scored two runs in the second, one in the third, two more in the fourth and a final one in sixth. The Trojans outhit the Green Hornets 11-9.

Morgan and Daria Krout both finished with two hits to lead Emmaus. Abigail Derr recorded two RBIs and Schwab added a hit, and RBI and scored a run.

Stats were not made available for the game with the Canaries.

Emmaus ended the regular season with a 14-6 overall record and 12-4 mark in the conference. The Green Hornets will be a top-four seed when the EPC playoffs get underway this week.
