Howard E. Bowers
Howard E. Bowers, 87, of Slatington, died May 1, 2023, in his home.
He and his wife, Mary Ann (Sittler) Bowers, were married 62 years.
Born March, 18, 1936, in Albany Township, Berks County, he was the son of the late Harry and Dorothy (Kamp) Bowers.
He faithfully and honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era.
He was a melter and held other positions at the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. before retiring in 1992.
Before that, he worked at the former Lehigh Valley Dairy.
Active in the life of his church and community, he was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ, Slatington.
He was a past president of the Slatedale-Emerald Lions Club from 1981-82 (now West Lehigh Area Lions Club) and a past president of the Upper Lehigh Lions Club from 1999-2000.
He served as Lion’s District 14-K Governor and was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 2000.
He was a member of the Allen O. Delke American Legion Post 16 serving with the Honor Guard.
He was a past president of the Lehigh County Fireman’s Association, a life member of the Friedens and Emerald fire companies.
He enjoyed NASCAR racing making many trips to Daytona Speedway and other tracks throughout the area.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter-in-law Sharon L. Bowers; grandsons Jeremy and Kevin Stein, and Gene Bowers; great-grandchildren Nolan, Mackenzie, Layla, Gannon and Davey; and siblings Carol Jones (Al), Linda Leibenguth, Dorothy Kresinski (Gary), Russell Bowers (Linda), and Mark Bowers.
He was predeceased by a son, Eugene LeRoy Bowers, and 11 siblings.
