Zephyrs fall to LHS in EPC playoffs

Whitehall’s boys volleyball matches consistently attract a large, animated crowd, but last week’s Senior Night match against rival Northampton added to the celebratory mood as the Zephyrs swept the Konkrete Kids, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-18) on May 4.

“We really wanted to beat them because of what they did last year, and we wanted to have fun the whole game,” said senior outside hitter Aiden Parvel. “We had a lot of fun tonight, and we beat them, of course. Senior Night was an add-on tonight. Our attack is really good right now, especially with Jack (Kocher) and Ethan (Ringenberger), and everybody else hitting good.”

Ringenberger tallied 18 kills, 9 digs, 2 blocks, 3 aces, Kocher had 11 kills, 13 digs, 2 aces, Parvel added 4 kills, and Bryce Schache had 32 assists.

“We’re definitely playing better,” said Whitehall coach George Cowitch. “Defense is our priority, and I think we were better at that tonight. I like where we’re going in the lineup. We’ve been real consistent in that, so I’m excited about that.

“Hunter (Tiburzi, opposite hitter) got his first start, which is nice for him, and he deserves it. He’s a great team guy. We preach that to everybody, and he’s a leader for that, which is awesome. It was nice for Aiden, who was away for a couple years at Northern Lehigh, to come back contributing, and (middle hitter Gavin) Kneller is doing a good job for us in the middle, a two-year starter. It was nice to see them have a nice night tonight.”

Whitehall’s end to the regular season carried the Zephyrs into the beginning of postseason play in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament on May 9 when the Zephs traveled to Liberty but fell in the quarterfinal, 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-18).

Whitehall was primed to win the second set and led most of the way.

Ringenberger scored after the Zephyrs put a net ball back in play on two possessions, and Ethan Guzenski and Parvel had two consecutive blocks on the next point.

But after a timeout with the Zephyrs leading, 22-20, the Hurricanes came back to tie when the ball took an unusual roll backward off the fingers of Ringenberger. Liberty then won the set on a return that was mistaken for an out-of-bounds ball by Whitehall.

In the third set, the teams played to nine straight ties until Liberty pulled away at 20-16.

The Hurricanes will compete in a semifinal on May 11, and the Zephyrs will prepare for the District XI Tournament, scheduled to begin on May 25.
