In a somewhat quieter week due to weather, the Emmaus High School softball team played in just one game and came out on top in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference matchup.
In a rematch of two of the top teams in the conference, the Green Hornets were looking for revenge for a loss to Northampton back on April 5. The Hornets had won nine straight games since that setback. They made it 10 in a row as they got the revenge the were seeking with a 1-0 win over the K-Kids last Tuesday, April 25.
Emmaus won in dramatic fashion, scoring the only run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Northampton. Alexis Schoonover recorded the game-winning hit and RBI, scoring Sadie Haefeli for the 1-0 win.
It was a pitcher’s duel and defensive battle as the teams combined for just four total hits with the Green Hornets taking a 3-1 edge. Daria Krout and Ashlyn Sherwood joined Schoonover in the hit column for Emmaus. Danika Barthol threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just the one hit and striking out 12 Northampton batters for the win.
Emmaus is 12-5 overall and 10-3 in the conference, a half-game behind the Kids (13-3, 11-3) for second place in the West division. The Green Hornets hosted first-place Whitehall this past Tuesday and are at Parkland Wednesday and at Allen Thursday to conclude a three-game in three-day stretch this week. The postseason is set to begin next week.
