PHS softball beats Allen, ACC
Following a streak of losing seven of 10 games to begin the month of April, the Parkland High School softball team needed something to start going its way with the end of the regular season fast approaching.
The Trojans won both of their games last week by double digits in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play. Both games saw Trojan pitchers come away with no-hitters. They took down Central Catholic 15-0 in four innings last Tuesday, April 25, and then took care of Allen 13-1 in five innings last Thursday to complete an undefeated week.
Against the Vikettes, Parkland scored in every inning, bringing home two in the bottom of the first, one in the second, three in the third. A nine-run fourth inning ended the game.
Evelyn Montone and Anna Belletieri led the lineup with two hits each. Montone also had three RBIs and scored two runs, while Belletieri added an RBI and three runs scored. Brenna Zavecz and Addison Fritzinger both had a hit and two RBIs, while Nadine Tandazo, Emma Kushner, Maria Moore, Corinne Bigley and Nevaeh Young all contributed an RBI in the win. Allison Hunsberger earned the win inside the circle, striking out four.
Just like in the game prior, Parkland jumped out early on the Canaries, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings and then adding five in the third and two in the second. Hunsberger, Fritzinger, Montone, Tandazo and Taylor Benckini all finished with two hits to pace the offense, with Montone recording a season-best six RBIs. Hunsberger threw five strong innings, allowing an unearned run and striking out five.
Parkland currently sits at 8-9 overall and 8-7 in the conference, right on the brink of qualifying for the upcoming District 11 6A tournament, one in which it last won in 2019. The Trojans kept it rolling this week with a 4-2 victory on the road at Northampton this past Monday, making up for a close, one-run defeat in the regular season opener back in March. Parkland faced off with rival Emmaus in the conference’s final game yesterday and then is set to host Abington Heights on Friday afternoon in the regular season finale.
