First-place Parkland posts two shut outs

The Parkland High School baseball team picked up a pair of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victories last week in shutout fashion, creating some positive momentum leading into the last week of the 2023 regular season this week.

The Trojans defeated both Allentown Central Catholic and Allen at home by scores of 7-0. The game against the Vikings was last Tuesday, April 25, and the Canaries game was that Thursday.

Against the Vikings, Parkland got on the scoreboard early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added three more in the third and two in the fifth.

The Trojans and Vikings actually were even at 2-2 in hits, but most of the runs came via walks by Central pitchers, 12 in total.

Bo Barthol and Dominic Medlar combined for the two hits for Parkland, with the former adding an RBI and the latter contributing two. Jaiden Wanamaker had an RBI and a run scored. Barthol also threw seven strong innings on the mound and allowed just two hits, while striking out eight.

In the game with the Canaries, the Trojans scored twice in the bottom of the first, once in the third, three more in the fourth and then tacked on one in the sixth, outhitting Allen 9-2 along the way.

Barthol paced the lineup, going 3-for-3, scoring three runs and adding two RBIs. Will Dobil and Matthew Razzis both finished with two hits, with the former scoring two runs and the latter recording two runs batted in.

Nathan Bartholomew threw a complete-game shutout, giving up just two hits and striking out four batters.

Parkland was 16-2 overall and 13-2 in the conference with two games left in the regular season, in first place in the West Division and a half-game ahead of Liberty for the best record in the conference.

The Trojans defeated Northampton 11-2 this past Monday and hosted rival Emmaus Wednesday. The regular season finale is scheduled for Thursday at Hazleton in a nonconference game.
