LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Falcons top Roughies

With less than a week left in the regular season, Salisbury (9-7 overall, 8-5 Colonial) is continuing its push for a spot in the postseason. After missing the Colonial League playoffs a year ago, the Falcons currently have a game-and-a-half lead over Wilson for the sixth and final spot in this season’s race.

Rain washed out a couple of key games against Northwestern Lehigh and Palmerton, which now means the Falcons’ season will end with four games in six days, all against league opponents.

Against Catasauqua (3-13, 2-13) last week, the pitching and hitting came together to lead Salisbury to an 11-1 win over the Rough Riders and help them breach the .500 mark, moving them closer to a spot in the district playoffs. Salisbury scored all 11 runs in a three-inning span starting with a big third inning.

With one out and nobody on in the bottom of the third, Nate Nunez lined a pitch to center for a double. Pitcher McKay Lewis rebounded to get a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Matt Nunez hit a grounder to short that was misplayed for a two-base error, giving Salisbury a 1-0 lead.

Jacob Bucchin walked and was replaced at first by courtesy runner Andrew Grejda, who stole second. A single to right by Jake Zellin plated two more runs to give the Falcons a 4-0 edge before Lewis got the final out of the inning.

A two-out error followed by a walk and an RBI single by Christian Fye in the top of the fourth cut Salisbury’s lead to 4-1 before the Falcons got that one run and more back in the bottom of the fourth.

A leadoff walk and stolen base by Caleb Gonzales led to a run when Zeven Adamcik reached on an error, making it 5-1. Two outs later, back-to-back doubles by Matt Nunez and Bucchin made it 8-1 and Jordan Tocci’s RBI single made it 8-1 in favor of Salisbury.

Catasauqua threatened in the fifth when two errors and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, but Tom Lovelidge got the final out of the inning on a pop-up to first base to end the threat.

The Falcons opened their lead to 11-1 in the bottom of the inning. More shaky defense by the Roughies followed by a walk to Adamcik loaded the bases for the Falcons and another error brought in two more runs. Lovelidge singled to left to score Adamcik with the final run, ending the game on the 10-run rule.

The error-filled game saw Catasauqua commit eight errors and Salisbury charged with five of its own miscues. All 12 runs in the game were unearned due to errors.

All four of the Falcons’ remaining games are at home, with Palmerton (11-5, 9-5) and Pen Argyl (6-10, 5-10) coming to Salisbury on Wednesday and Thursday followed by Northwestern Lehigh (10-6, 8-5) on Saturday and Southern Lehigh (13-1, 12-1) on Monday.
