Chow, Stone reach doubles final
Members of the Emmaus boys tennis team competed in the District 11 Class 3A singles and doubles championships last week.
Eddy Chow, the Green Hornets’ No. 1 singles player during the season, had a solid tournament. He looked good in the first round, beating Northampton’s Pearce Foulk, 6-0, 6-1. Then in the quarters Chow frustrated Southern Lehigh’s Harrison Clark with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Chow’s tournament ended with a semifinal loss to eventual champion Noah Potts of Freedom, 6-1, 6-3. Potts won his third straight District 11 singles title with a win over Parkland’s Josh Thomas.
Nick Stone, Emmaus’ No. 2 singles player during the year, faced Thomas in the opening round, losing 6-2, 6-2.
Later in the week the District 11 doubles championships featured the Hornets’ Chow and Stone. The two young men had a superb tournament for Emmaus coach Fred Saab.
In the opening round the duo had little trouble with Parkland’s Noah Oxfeld and Thomas Gilchrist, 6-1, 6-2. They looked just as good in beating Liberty’s Chris Giannaras and Sid Tekumalla 6-4, 6-1 in the quarters.
The duo saved its best work for the semifinals when it battled Freedom’s Gavin Labbadia and Arun Chhugani. The Emmaus boys dug themselves a hole with a 6-4 first-set loss, but they refused to pack it in. Chow and Stone walloped the Pates’ team 6-1 in the second set and then won a third set thriller, 7-5.
But their tank was empty in the championship match where Chow and Stone fell to Liberty’s Roman Farhad and Luke Appleman, 6-1, 6-4.
The District 11 boys tennis team championships are scheduled to begin May 1. Emmaus, the tournament’s No. 6 seed, battles No. 3 Parkland in the quarterfinals.
