Cabaret concert at Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, Emmaus

Jon Satrom is returning to his home town of Emmaus for a concert that mixes contemporary Broadway songs with 1980s’ pop.

Satrom performs, 4 p.m. May 6, Worship Center, The Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, 3461 S. Cedar Crest Boulevard, Emmaus.

He will be accompanied by Sharon MacCabe, piano; Austin Gross, bass, and Frank Mattes, drums.

MacCabe is Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, Director of Music.

Speaking from his home in the Astoria, Queens, neighborhood of New York City, Satrom says this will be a cabaret show. He defines cabaret as “an intimate performance that breaks the fourth wall with the audience.”

In his third appearance at the church, Satrom will tell anecdotes about his career and share memories about Emmaus and Holy Spirit church, where his mother is still a member.

The songs not be those of his previous appearances at the church, but he says the concert will have the same style.

He plans to perform “Beautiful City” from “Godspell,” “Home” from “The Wiz,” “Sandy” from “Grease,” “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins, Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road,” and U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”

His Broadway songs are from a later era than fans of the Golden Age of Musicals might remember, although Satrom says they have been received well in his past performances at Holy Spirit.

New Broadway songs are being written, but there are not as many shows being presented on the Great White Way.

“It is harder to get shows on Broadway. You need really good audience reception and good reviews. Backers are a little more nervous with the money,” Satrom says, adding, “There are a lot more ‘jukebox’ shows like ‘Moulin Rouge.’”

A jukebox show uses songs that have already been written, typically popular hits or those of a particular singer-songwriter or group. and compiles them into a musical.

Satrom has been on national tours of “A Year With Frog and Toad,” “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley” and “The Ant and the Elephant.” His cabaret show, “Middle of a Moment,” which can be seen on YouTube, centers around his four years performing in children’s theater.

Regionally his roles include Danny Zuko in “Grease,” the title role in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” Tony in “West Side Story” and Frank Butler in “Annie Get Your Gun.”

He has been Company Manager for national tours of “Mamma Mia!” and “Rent.” He describes the job as being a “tour manager, in charge of flights and buses and representing the producer. It was interesting being on the other side of the table for a couple of years instead of performing.”

Satrom received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from New York University.

When he is not on the road, he is a singing bartender at Brandy’s Piano Bar and Don’t Tell Mama in Manhattan.

The 39-year-old Satrom was born in Allentown and attended Wescosville and Shoemaker Elementary schools and Emmaus High School. He was a member of Emmaus Harmony, a choir of East Penn School District students, and was the student director of the junior version of the choir.

“I took voice lessons in high school. My older sister was in theater, and seeing her in those productions inspired me to do it,” he recalls.

Satrom appeared in high school productions and at Civic Theatre of Allentown in “Merrily We Roll Along,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Tommy” and “Blood Brothers.”

Following his Emmaus concert, Satrom will perform on a week-long river cruise in France.

After doing so many Broadway songs, he says that one day he would like to appear in a Broadway show.

A free-will offering will be taken to benefit the Sixth Street Shelter, Allentown, and Hearts for Haiti. Information: 610-967-2220; https://lchsemmaus.org/
