Volleyball team clinches district playoff spot

Whitehall’s boys volleyball team clinched a berth in the District XI playoffs with its 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-15) victory over William Allen last week.

“We had to play at our level the whole time, and sometimes we lost energy a little and had to bring it back again,” said Whitehall middle hitter Gavin Kneller.

The Zephyrs went on to win another three-set match two days later, defeating Pocono Mountain West, 25-8, 25-7, 25-10.

The match against the Panthers was an opportunity for Whitehall coach George Cowitch to play his reserves.

Said Kneller, a senior starter, “ I want to get everybody on our bench in the game. That’s what makes me the most happy besides the win. You don’t want to be playing down to their level. You want to play at your level the whole time throughout the match.”

After cruising against Allen and Pocono Mountain West, the 7-4 Zephyrs came up against 9-2 Nazareth on May 1.

“Maybe the danger is that you don’t want to become complacent. You want to keep getting better, keep going higher. We just have to play our game,” said Kneller prior to the match against Nazareth won by the Blue Eagles 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 18-25, 26-24, 12-15).

But the Zephyrs went on another upswing on May 2 with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-15) defeat of Easton for the second time this season.

The Zephyrs will take on a conference rival on May 4 when they host the Northampton Konkrete Kids.
