Pitcher Beth Carney reinjured her ankle while warming up to pitch against Palmerton and is again forced to watch the Lady Falcons rather than help them on the field. That again left coach Jane Brennan and pitching coach Mike Silberman to scour the roster for pitching recruits.
While Carney’s loss is felt on the mound, it is also felt on the offensive side of the ledger, leaving Salisbury (1-14 overall, 0-12 Colonial) to be outscored 56-6 in three games last week.
Against Palisades (13-1, 11-1), Riley Knecht, Zaira Stokes, Skylyn Mason, and Ava Grube all had hits for Salisbury with Stokes knocking in two runs and Grube driving in a third. Bailey Neitz also reached on an error and later scored in Salisbury’s four-run third inning.
Next up was Saucon Valley (4-9, 3-8) and Neitz, Gabby De Jesus, and Amelia Swoyer all had two hits in the loss, with De Jesus and Swoyer both driving in runs. Neitz, who has been the primary pitcher with the loss of Carney, got the start and Stokes made her first pitching appearance of the season when she came on in relief. Stokes threw three innings and allowed just two earned runs for Salisbury.
After making her first relief appearance against Saucon Valley, Stokes made her first start of the season against Palmerton (10-5, 8-4), but three errors hurt her chances as the Falcons fell to the Lady Bombers 15-0.
Salisbury opened their schedule this week with a loss to Catasauqua (6-8, 4-8) and will play Northwestern Lehigh (12-2, 9-2) on Friday. It is possible that Carney will be back on the mound for the game against the Lady Tigers.
