Parkland wins EPC tennis tournament
The Parkland boys tennis program won gold in taking the 2023 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference postseason championship last Thursday afternoon at Freedom High School.
In securing the title, the Trojans received several outstanding performances. Leading the way were the No. 3 doubles team of Noah Oxfeld and Tommy Gilchrist and the No. 4 doubles duo of Ryan Wu and Ojas Karandikar, who each won their brackets.
Oxfeld and Gilchrist downed Freedom’s Tyler Malitzki and Matt Davis in the quarters and Nazareth’s Sai Pulavarthy and Ilias Phanzu in the semis. In the championship match, the Parkland duo beat Liberty’s Connor Ohl and Finn Brown.
Wu and Karandikar dismissed Easton’s Raymond Baurkot and Tyler Grogg in the quarterfinals, and Central Catholic’s Alex de Gale and Aryaan Chauhan in the semifinals. The title was secured with a win over the Hurricanes’ Matt Alter and Caden Vermuelen.
No. 1 singles Josh Thomas did not win his bracket, but had a fine tournament. He beat Central Catholic’s Timmy Spinosa in the quarters and Liberty’s Roman Farhad - a fine player - in the semis. In the championship match Thomas was unable to handle Freedom’s Noah Potts.
No. 2 singles Lucas Lee won his quarterfinal match with Central’s Mack Zeller, but came up short against Freedom’s Gavin Labaddia. Lee did, however, win the consolation final over Nazareth’s Gideon Knowles.
No. 3 singles Kevin Yao beat Easton’s Ben Wallitsch in the quarterfinals and took down the Vikings’ Tanner Temple in the semis. Yao was unable to defeat Freedom’s Arun Chhugani in the final.
Parkland’s No. 2 doubles team featuring Taehyuk Yang and Rithik Raghuraman, had their tournament end early with a loss to Nazareth’s Ishaan Patel and Logan Baltz in the quarters.
Up next for the Trojans are the District 11 3A singles championships starting April 24 with first round and quarterfinal action at Lehigh University. The title will be decided the next day at Saucon Valley High School with the semis and championship matches.
