Parkland softball drops pair of one-run games

The Parkland High School softball team was involved in a few of one-run games last week. The Trojans fell 5-4 last Monday, April, 17 on the road at Stroudsburg, then went to extra innings and came out on top over Bethlehem Catholic two days later, 3-2 in eight innings. Two days after that, the Trojans dropped another close, one-run game at Whitehall, losing 5-4. They finished out the week hosting Tunkhannock in a nonconference game on Saturday, but were downed 13-1.

Against the Mountaineers, it looked as if Parkland was on its way to a road win as it jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring three in the top of the first inning and another one in the third. Stroudsburg got on the scoreboard with a run in the third and another in the fourth, but the Trojans still led 4-2 heading into the sixth. That’s when the Mountaineers had a breakthrough, recording a three-run sixth that allowed them to take the game. Five errors hurt the Trojans defense.

Allison Hunsberger, Brenna Zavecz and Cecelia Quiroz combined for the three hits for Parkland. Quiroz and Addison Fritzinger both recorded an RBI.

Parkland brought home a run in each of the first two innings and held Becahi scoreless for the first five innings of play. The Golden Hawks tied the game in the six with two runs, taking the game into extras. But the Trojans would not be denied of this one-run game, finishing it off in the eighth to walk it off.

Zavecz and Evelyn Montone both had two hits with Zavecz also recording an RBI. Fritzinger and Corinne Bigley both contributed an RBI. Hunsberger earned the win inside the circle, throwing all eight innings.

Just like in the two games prior, Parkland got out to an early lead, scoring twice in the top of the third, but the Zephyrs answered with three in the bottom half. The teams then also traded runs in the fifth with both bringing home two runs each.

Hunsberger led the offense with three hits and Montone and Fritzinger both tallied two, with the latter driving in two runs.

There was a lot of scoring for Tunkhannock and some mistakes from the Parkland defense as the Tigers held a 13-6 hit advantage and scored 11 runs in the first three innings, including nine in the opening two. Fritzinger finished with a team-best two hits and added an RBI.

Parkland is currently 6-9 overall and 6-7 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference after shutting out Central Catholic, 15-0, at home this past Tuesday. The Trojans host Allen in another conference game on Thursday.
